Held at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre (HKCEC) from 30 July 2010 to 3 August 2010, I got the opportunity to visit this annual event during my time in Hong Kong. I’ve always wondered what an event of this type will be like? Meeting lots of people with the same interest in the popular Japanese anime culture? Otaku? Cosplayers? Celebrities? Normal people?

The Final Fantasy series have never seem to let me down throughout the many years of my gaming experience. Final Fantasy has always been about the storyline to me, and the improvements in graphics and gameplay are there to enhance the overall experience of it. Keeping this in mind, Square Enix brought Final Fantasy XIII on to a brand new direction on the PlayStation 3, full with new characters, new worlds, and new gameplay mechanics to revolutionize traditional JRPGs.

In the past few weeks I spent some time on and off and by the time I finished the main story I was probably around the 60 hours mark. I spent another good 30 hours finishing side missions and collecting all the items to finally get the Platinum trophy. Now that I’m completely done with this game, I thought that I should share with you my overall thoughts about it, without any major spoilers to the game. As most of you may know, one of the main things that have been the criticized in this game is the extremely linear path which the players must take throughout the game. By linear I mean that we’re just walking down one path to continue the story. They also removed the traditional elements of the towns/villages, side quests and there are no places to explore, not until towards the end of the game.
Despite this, as someone who completed the game and as someone who has played Final Fantasy since 10 years ago, I can see why Square Enix made this game incredibly linear. They wanted the players to be immersed into the exciting story of the game and they didn’t want players to diverge away from the main plot. That being said, there was great character and plot development which showed us how the main characters ended up being together and how their actions affected some of the main conflicts between Cocoon (planet above the ground) and Pulse (the land below).

Got a copy of the Final Fantasy XIII Collector’s Edition Official Guide a day before the release of FFXIII. Don’t think I’ll be using it at the beginning, but it surely is a very detailed book containing all the walkthrough for each chapter (with minimal story spoilers), all the side quests, mini-games and explanation of all the Trophies or Achievements. The book contains all the official artwork and hi-res screenshots from the game printed on high quality paper. Its only a one-time print run and each copy gets its own number at the back of the hardcover. Don’t miss out on this great addition to your Final Fantasy Collection.

Most of you might have known but apparently the PlayStation Network is currently in havoc mode. Lots of gamers around the world can’t sign-in to their accounts and some have had their trophy data corrupted. Also, there are issues that prevent players from accessing certain games such as Heavy Rain, where they get kicked back out to the XMB.
All of this seems to only happen on the early “phat” PS3 units and users of the slim PS3 have reported that they are connecting normally. It might be due to an internal hardware or firmware issue and maybe similar to the Microsoft Zune problems with the way it handles the leap year. I guess the safest way is to leave your PS3 turned off for now until there’s a fix to this problem. Lucky for me, I haven’t signed in today.
You can read about some official updates on the matter via Twitter.
Sony have now made a number of official responses via Twitter.
- We’re aware that many of you are having problems connecting to PSN, and yes, we’re looking into it. Stay tuned for updates.
- PSN status update: We’re narrowing down the issue and continue to work to restore service to all. Updates as soon as we have them.
- PSN status update (part 2): Readers/followers are confirming that “slim” units (120/250 GB models) are connecting normally.
Some of the errors involved (as posted on the PlayStation Blog):
Errors include:
- The date of the PS3 system may be re-set to Jan 1, 2000.
- When the user tries to sign in to the PlayStation Network, the following
message appears on the screen; “An error has occurred. You have been
signed out of PlayStation Network (8001050F)”.
- When the user tries to launch a game, the following error message appears
on the screen and the trophy data may disappear; “Failed to install
trophies. Please exit your game.”
- When the user tries to set the time and date of the system via the
Internet, the following message appears on the screen; “The current date
and time could not be obtained. (8001050F)”
- Users are not able to play back certain rental video downloaded from the
PlayStation Store before the expiration date.
Update
It seems like everything is restored to normal for now. However, the date of the PS3 system might not be correct. Looks like Sony weren’t sitting around all day for nothing.
